Simona Halep v Shuai Zhang Head to Head
There have been five previous meetings between these two players and Halep leads Zhang 3-2. Their most recent match came at Madrid earlier this year and Halep dropped just five games en route that win.
There have been three matches on hard court surfaces, with Zhang leading 2-1 but those were held between 2012 and 2016.

Donna Vekic had made it to the main draw of this competition as a lucky loser and Halep banished her out yet again in fine fashion.
The multiple Grand Slam winner took over Vekic 6-0, 6-2 in a mere 62 minutes, in a match that saw her drop just nine points on her own serve. In fact despite the bagel in the first set, it was in the second that Halep looked more menacing on her her serve.
This whitewash comes on the back of a second round retirement at the Washington Open, providing a sense of relief to the Halep fans given the potential for fitness problems in the lead-up to the US Open.
Halep will now take on a player who has had her time against her, but with the kind of form the Romanian has been in, in hard court competitions (17-5 win-loss), she should not have too many worries here.

Zhang in Rare Hard Court Win
It hasn’t been the kind of hard court tournament results that Zhang would have hoped for this season, which is why a straight-set win in the first round should help.
Having won just four main draw matches on outdoor hard courts this year, Zhang was still a favourite against Cristina Bucsa, her opening opponent. And she lived up to that billing as she came away with a 6-1, 6-3 victory in exactly an hour.
Zhang lost her serve immediately after having earned a break in the first set but that was to become the only game she would lose in that set.
She then broke Bucsa twice to take a 4-1 lead in the second, and while she was broken once again, Zhang quickly settled in for the straight-set win.
