Former world number one, current World No. 20 Victoria Azarenka is through to the quarterfinal in Washington after beating Tereza Martincova 7-6(9), 6-2 in two hours and 12 minutes on Friday.
The 33-year-old will face Wang on the same day as her round two match was postponed. With only a matter of hours to recuperate, Azarenka faces a challenging task when she takes on her counterpart – 12 years younger than her.
It has been a slow season for Victoria, who has cautiously navigated the tour with participation in select events only. Her tally now stands at 16-8, with her last tournament being the French Open.
For what it’s worth, the five-time Grand Slam finalist has reached three of her last tour-level finals in the United States. If fitness weren’t a concern, this match would have likely been a breeze for the Belarusian.

Wang Upsets Vekic
21-year-old Chinese Xiyu Wang began the tournament as a qualifier but lost to Louisa Chirico in the final qualifying round. However, the lucky loser rule got her through to the main draw, where she booked a clash with Tatjana Maria. The youngster defeated the veteran German 6-2, 7-5 to face Donna Vekic.
Making the most of her chance, Wang maintained the same rhythm as she dispatched the Croat 4-6, 7-5, 6-1.
With that, Wang – current World No. 95 – has now improved her score to 32-17 in 2022, with most of those wins coming in the Challenger/ITF tournaments.
Xiyu did well to reach the final in the Valencia Challenger and ITF Palm Harbour, Charlottesville, and Charleston. On the WTA side, she hasn’t been this consistent, although she was a quarterfinalist in Budapest – her biggest highlight on the circuit.
Nonetheless, Wang holds a great deal of promise and may very well surprise others in due course of time.

Wang had the advantage of a day’s rest and will be fully ready for this fixture. By contrast, Azarenka is in a race against time to get fit – the only question is will she get there? Expect an entertaining affair.
