Kyrgios Saves 5 MPs to Down Tiafoe
In the most entertaining contest of this year’s Washington Open, 2019 champion Nick Kyrgios saved five match points in the second set tiebreak, before turning the tables on 10th seed Frances Tiafoe and advancing into the semifinals.
The two-hour-and-30-minute contest saw the Aussie save 3 of 3 break points in the match, and convert 2 of 7 to win 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (14-12), 6-2.
There were as many as 221 points played in the match, with Kyrgios winning 116 of them. He also struck 60 winners and 35 aces to Tiafoe’s 33 winners and 16 aces.
Tiefoe is the fourth American that Kyrgios has defeated this week. The Australian began his campaign with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Marcos Giron and then defeated Tommy Paul 6-3, 6-4 in the second round. His Round of 16 match, which began on Thursday, ended on Friday with a 7-6 (7-1), 6-2 win over Reilly Opelka.
Playing just his ninth tournament of the year, Kyrgios improved his season record to 25-7. The Wimbledon runner-up will be playing in a fifth semifinal on Saturday.
After going out in the semis in Houston, Stuttgart and Halle, he reached his first major final at the grass court major before going down to Novak Djokovic. This is his first tournament since then and he could be featuring in consecutive finals if he wins on Saturday.

Ymer’s Surprise Run Continues
World no. 115 Mikael Ymer’s surprise run continued in the tournament as the Swede edged past American Sebastian Korda on Friday to reach the final four.
Down 0-2 in the first set, the 23-year-old Ymer won six games in a row to claim the opening set. He was cruising to victory in the second, having built a 2-5 lead, thanks to a double break, but Korda came right back into the contest, winning the next five games in a row and forcing the decider.
Ymer raced to a 5-1 lead in the third, before Korda attempted another comeback bid. The American won two games in a row, saving four match points during that phase, but the Swede broke for a third time in the ninth game to complete a 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 victory.
This is the second time that Ymer is in the semifinals this year, having also made it that far in Montpellier. All four of Ymer’s matches in Washington have gone the distance. He began his campaign with a stunning 7-6 (10-8), 4-6, 6-1 win over Andy Murray. In the next round, Ymer ousted 15th seed Aslan Karatsev 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, while in the Round of 16, the Swede knocked out Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori 6-3, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4.
Having spent close to 11 years during the first four rounds, Ymer will be a bit tired, bth physically and mentally, but having done all the hard work this week, he will be up for the semifinals on Saturday, where win could lift him into a second ATP final. Last year he finished runner-up in Winston Salem.
Kyrgios v Ymer Prediction and Tip
Kyrgios is in sensational form and it will take a massive effort from Ymer to stop him. But the Aussie will be wary of the Swede’s ability to dig deep. Expect Ymer to put up a fight, but Kyrgios to advance.
Tip: Kyrgios to win in straight sets: 10/11 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
