Serena Williams v Nuria Parrizas Diaz Head to Head
Serena and Parrizas Diaz have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

She had won her third round match at French Open last June as she sent Danielle Collins packing in straight sets but since then, Serena has won no competitive encounter.
A fourth round defeat there to Elena Rybakina was followed by an injury in the first round at Wimbledon that saw Serena withdraw from the match at 3-3. And then she did not play another singles match for about a year.
Serena returned to the circuit earlier this year at her favourite tournament on grass again but this time around, it was Harmony Tan who registered a 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (7) victory over the former world number one.
What remains to be seen is a couple of things; if Serena will be able to shrug off her rustiness of having barely played and if the quality of play isn’t hampered too much by her injury.
An interesting first round opponent too for Serena given that Parrizas Diaz is a strong hard court player.

Parrizas Diaz Makes it Lucky Loser
While Parrizas Diaz’s record on hard court surfaces is usually a strong one, this year has been bit of an exception. And it’s not just on those surfaces but also overall, that has seen a dip in her fortunes.
Here in Canada, Parrizas Diaz was sent packing in her second qualifying round by Cristina Bucsa and made it through as a lucky loser.
She did make it to the third round at the Australian Open and was a semifinalist in Monterrey, in what were two of her stronger showing in hard court competitions. That’s also where she has won one of her two WTA125 titles and made it 29 of her 38 ITF tournament finals.
Parrizas Diaz will know she has a chance here despite the pedigree of her opponent but will have to up her own game from what has been on show this entire year.

Serena starts off a 3/10 favourite but this could get to be a lot closer than what those odds suggest with Parrizas Diaz pushing the three-time Rogers Cup winner to a third set.
