Rune looked to be sitting pretty in the quarterfinal of the French Open earlier this year, having had an excellent run on clay otherwise too.
Since then, however, things seem to have unravelled quickly for Rune who has lost eight of his following nine encounters including six first round defeats in tournaments. That’s as shocking as it can get for a top-30 player which Rune is at the moment.
That he won his opener at Washington last week was down to the fact that not too many players are losing to Benoit Paire at the moment anyway but as soon as he met another opponent, Rune fell away. It was JJ Wolf who took him down in three sets in the second round in Washington.
Rune now takes on another player who hasn’t had the best of times on the circuit since the pandemic-induced break in 2020. This could be his chance to garner some rhythm.

Fognini Has to Make Past Qualifiers
Fognini had won only three main draw matches in hard court competitions before having to fight his way through the qualifiers in this tournament.
The former world number nine and a Masters 1000 winner, Fognini did not have much of a problem against Canadian and world number 823 Kelsey Stevenson in his first qualifier. However, in the second, Daniel Altmaier took Fognini to a third set before the Italian had his say.
Overall, Fognini looked to have made some progress since those abysmal few months on court since the pandemic, especially on clay where he reached the semifinal at Rio and Belgrade but can that form be translated into something substantial here?
Especially against a player who has struggled to get going in recent times on any of the surfaces.
Rune v Fognini Prediction and Tip
This could be a tough one to call given both players struggle outside of clay and haven’t had the greatest of seasons. Expect there to be a tussle that goes into a third set.
