Benoît Paire v Yoshihito Nishioka Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before, in the round of 32 in Dubai four years ago, Paire winning in three sets.

Paire Looking to Arrest Steep Decline

It is emblematic of how far Paire has fallen from grace this year, that he has not only dropped out of the top 100 for the first time since 2015, but he now finds himself forced to qualify for tournaments like Canada, where he would previously receive an automatic invite to the main draw.

However, having gone almost three months without a win of any sort, he was happy to break his drought by beating the German Peter Gojowczyk in the first round in Washington last week.

And to prove that winning can be as addictive a habit as losing, he defeated Denis Kudla of the USA and Marc-Andrea Huesler of  Switzerland in the qualifying competition to earn his chance against Nishioka.

His best result in this event came when he reached the third round on debut here in 2013.

Washington Runner-Up Nishioka

Nishioka has experienced his own period in the doldrums, but his ranking will shortly get a major boost after he reached his first final in two years in Washington on Sunday.

In the end he lost in straight sets to Nick Kyrgios, but he can take considerable pride from a week’s work which included wins over Jenson Brooksby, Alex de Minaur, and Dan Evans.

That, though, was the first time he had been beyond the opening round of an ATP event since Miami in March. His next challenge is to produce his Washington form more consistently.

Paire v Nishioka Prediction and Tip

Much may depend on Nishioka’s ability to recover from his exploits in Washington. If he finds it difficult to refocus, then that may offer Paire the best chance of victory. Otherwise, the Japanese can look forward to another morale boosting win.
