Serena Williams v Nuria Parrizas Diaz
Serena Williams will make her debut on hard courts this year after returning last month at Wimbledon. The America legend lost that match but is hopeful to win this one and it will be a very tough one. Parrizas Diaz is a player who doesn’t play her best on hard courts but her game is quite annoying.
The Spaniard likes to attack but she’s also fairly quick which makes it very hard to break her down during a rally. One thing Serena will need to do is keep the points short and the serve could prove a weapon in that. Parrizas Diaz doesn’t have a strong one and Williams can attack it as well.
The Spaniard has a good shot here and she knows it. There won’t many nerves but she will need to bring her best. For Serena, the key is to keep the points short and if she does that she should see her confidence rise as the match goes on.
A potential win could do wonders for Serena but it’s important to win this first one. That’s a hurdle she could not overcome at Wimbledon. I think she does do it here.
Tip: Williams to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
Holger Rune v Fabio Fognini
A clash of two big personalities on the Tour will kick off the Montreal event and it’s going to be a good one. Neither of them enjoys playing on hard courts that much but both are very capable. Neither are having great seasons except for a few isolated runs here and there.
Rune is the better player at this stage, everybody knows that but with Fognini you never know. The Italian did have some interesting matches here last year and he had to play the qualifiers to get into the main draw. That allowed him to play himself into some sort of rhythm, something Rune did not get.
The Dane did get some matches in Washington and he did okay beating Benoit Paire and losing to J.J. Wolf. It’s an interesting matchup where we should except everything.
it’s hard calling it because you never know with Fognini but I do lean towards Rune a bit more. Generally, it’s expected to be a very up and down affair that will go three sets so that’s the play. Back the three sets and enjoy the match.
Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
Sofia Kenin v Sloane Stephens
A clash of former grand slam champions will happen in round one of Toronto and it will see one of them win. It’s an All-American one too with Kenin playing Stephens. Kenin is making her return to tennis after dealing with numerous injuries in the past two years and the American hopes to return to her 2020 level.
It will be a process but Kenin is ready for it cherishing the ability to simply play tennis. Her opponent will be fellow American Sloane Stephens who is not dealing with injuries but generally poor play. Her last match win came at Roland Garros in May and since then it’s been a losing streak.
Stephens played well during this part of the year last year so she hopes to finally get some wins. It’s going to be tricky against Kenin who can certainly beat her however unlikely this is.
I do think Stephens will win this because Kenin will need a long time to get into a proper rhythm but the safer play here is the over. I’m pretty sure neither can smash the other easily so I’ll just back the tight affair with a 3-set potential.
