Casper Ruud v Alex Molcan Head to Head
At the highest level, these two have faced off once before this and that match came in the 2022 Munich Open. Ruud needed three sets to get past Molcan in that second round encounter.
In an earlier meeting on the Challenger circuit, Molcan had defeated Ruud in Sevilla, also on clay.

The last time Ruud took to court in a hard court competition, he was blown away by a red-hot Carlos Alcaraz. That, however, doesn’t say the full story, a story that underlines the amount of work that Ruud has put in to get going in non-clay court competitions.
Because the Norwegian number one was playing Alcaraz in the final of the Miami Masters, a spot he had earned with wins over Cameron Norrie and Alexander Zverev.
Since then Ruud has been back on clay, wowing fans with his solidity, having won the Geneva Open and Gstaad Open titles and reaching the final at Roland-Garros.
The return to hard courts will be a difficult one obviously given he has been away from it for around five months but in Molcan he has an opponent who isn’t much of a hard-courter himself.

Molcan Stuns McDonald in Opener
Molcan was 11/10 underdog to claim a win in his first round match against Mackenzie McDonald and he did that in straight sets to record his sixth victory on hard court surfaces this season.
Following on just two other wins in previous seasons in hard court competitions, this has already been excellent going for the 42nd-ranked player.
In a match lasting an hour and 47 minutes, Molcan won 7-6 (1), 6-4 to set up a meeting with Ruud in the second round.
Molcan lost his serve late in the first set only to break back to love and push it into a tie-breaker. He proceeded to rout McDonald 7-1 in it and then broke his Aussie opponent in the fifth game of the second set to seal things out.

Ruud might not be the best player on hard court surfaces but he has shown marked improvement on it and while rustiness could also be a factor, he starts a heavy favourite.
