Hubert Hurkacz v Emil Ruusuvuori Head to Head
Their only previous meeting came at the Washington Open last week and Ruusuvuori had shocked Hurkacz in straight sets in that match. Can he make it two in two or will Hurkacz have his revenge?

It’s been the kind of roller-coaster form that Hurkacz would like to avoid. After winning the title at Halle, Hurkacz has lost successive first round matches, the defeats coming at Wimbledon and in Washington last week.
Interestingly Hurkacz had crashed out of the Stuttgart Open in the first round too, in a competition just before Halle Open.
Having gone into the US Open Series’ first match for him, Hurkacz fell to this very opponent in a fighting couple of sets.
The 2021 Miami Masters winner, Hurkacz was a semifinalist at that tournament this year too and made it that far in Dubai as well. His hard court record, as a result, isn’t as bad as his recent showings might want to exhibit but he would be desperate to shrug off these first round losses.

Ruusuvuori Stalls Stan Wawrinka
He needed three sets but Ruusuvuori was able to overcome Stan Wawrinka in a fighting three-setter to carve out a place in the second round.
In a match lasting two hours and 12 minutes, Ruusuvuori defeated his Swiss opponent, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to set up a second meeting with Hurkacz in as many weeks.
It was a stroll in the park for Ruusuvuori in the first set as all it needed was a break of serve in the second game to wrap things up later. And when Ruusuvuori broke Wawrinka again in the fifth game of the second set, the writing was on the wall.
Except that Wawrinka fought back to break him twice in succession and wrap up the equaliser.
Ruusuvuori got himself a break in the sixth game of the decider though, and then ensured there would be no late comebacks from Wawrinka to seal his next berth.
Can he now make it two in two, i.e. two wins in a row in this tournament and against Hurkacz?

This time around Ruusuvuori will start off confidently but Hurkacz is still the favourite here and we are backing the Polish player to find himself a way to win this.
