Sakkari Coming off Opening Washington Loss

Much like this tournament in Canada, Sakkari had a first round bye at Washington too. In what turned out to be her first match on the USA Open Series, Sakkari fell away quickly to Shelby Rogers in the second round there.

Sakkari won just four games in her rout at the hands of the eventual runner-up but she would want to look even further back than that to garner some confidence.

The Greek number one, who hasn’t won a WTA title since 2019, had reached the final of the Indian Wells Open earlier this March with a solid display of tennis that saw her overcome the likes of Elena Rybakina and Paula Badosa en route there.

And while she went down to Iga Swiatek in that encounter, Sakkari has built a 16-7 win-loss record on hard court surfaces this season. Can she make it a number 17th here?

Stephens Wins a Topsy-Turvy Match

Stephens needed six match-points but in the end, prevailed over fellow American Sofia Kenin in a tight three-setter to make it to the second round of the competition.

The world number 50, who was on a four-match losing streak coming into this encounter, won 6-2, 6-7 (5), 7-5 to set up her meeting with Sakkari.

The match that eventually lasted three hours, should have been over a lot quicker when Stephens took a 6-2, 5-1 lead in the encounter only to see that disappear in a matter of minutes.

Four match-points and two breaks of serves later, the players were back on level terms and it took Stephens another comeback in the third set to come through. This time around, she led 5-2 in the final set before Kenin clawed back to level things out at 5-5.

Fortunately for Stephens, she managed to hold her nerve – and serve – before breaking her opponent one last time to finish off the match.

Stephens would hope to do a lot better against Sakkari.

Sakkari v Stephens Prediction and Tip

Sakkari, despite her poor start to the US Open Series, will hold the edge and should come away with a win once she has shrugged off the initial rustiness.

Tip: Sakkari to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
