Fernandez Makes a Winning Return

Playing for the first time since her quarterfinal exit at Roland Garros, Leylah Fernandez had to toil for a first round win at the Canadian Open.

The 19-year-old, who missed more than two months of action due to a stress fracture in her right foot, needed two hours and 41 minutes to hold off Australia’s Storm Sanders in the opening round.

After taking the first set with a break in the last game, the world no. 13 had two match points on Sannders’ serve at 4-5 in the second set. But having missed out on the opportunity to capitalise on either of them, she lost the set in the tiebreak.

The 13th seed regrouped and came back well in the third set, breaking the Aussie twice and taking the match  6-4, 6-7 (2-7), 6-3.

The win improved the 2021 U.S. Open finalist to 17-8 this season. Although she hasn’t played a lot due to the injury, two of her most notable performances include her second WTA title in Monterrey and quarterfinal debut at the French Open.

Monday’ win was the Canadian’s first win at the WTA 1000 tournament at home. She was 0-2 in the tournament before this year.
