Badosa Hoping to Make a Solid Start
World No. 3 Paula Badosa begins her campaign in the second round after receiving a first round bye. The Spaniard is in good touch this season and comes into the tournament following a semifinal finish in San Jose. Although she was expected to make the finals at the Silicon Valley Classic but went down in straight sets to eventual champion Daria Kasatkina.
Badosa will be eager to overcome the disappointment quickly and make a solid start in what is her second main draw appearance in Toronto. Last year, she won the opener but faltered in the second round.
Seeded No. 4 this year, Badosa brings a 29-14 season record into the tournament. The 24-year-old Spaniard, who won the Indian Wells title last year, began the 2022 season by picking up her third WTA title.
She beat Barbora Krajcikova to claim the Sydney International trophy and then made her fourth round debut at the Australian Open. Some of her other highlights this year included semifinal finishes in Indian Wells, Stuttgart and San Jose and last eight finishes in Miami and Charleston.
She will be hoping to make a solid start on Wednesday with an aim of going deep in another tournament.

Putintseva Rallies Past Sebov
World no. 46 Yulia Putintseva escaped an early exit as she fought back from a set down to hold off World no. 299 Katherine Sebov in the first round.
Having conceded the only break of the first set, Putintseva fought back in the second with two breaks of serve.
In the third, both players went up a break once but the other broke back to stay in the contest. However, it was in the 12th game of the set when Putintsev got the decisive break, closing out the match by converting a fourth match point.
Putintseva won the two-hour-and-eight-minute contest 3-6, 6-2, 7-5. She had lost four consecutive first round matches in the Canadian Open in her previous four appearances. The win was just her second in the tournament following her first round win on debut in 2014.
This year, Putintseva has done well on clay reaching semifinals in Istanbul and Budapest. On hard courts, her best has been a third round appearance in Miami. Can she pull off a surprise win in the second round?
