After finishing her grass court engagements in July with a Wimbledon final under her belt, Jabeur made a return to hard court tennis in San Jose.
And while she made a winning return when she usurped Madison Keys in her opener there, a 9/5 underdog Veronika Kudermetova got the better of her in the second round. A 6-7 (5), 2-6 loss for Jabeur would have given her something to think about heading into the rest of the US Open Series.
Jabeur has struggled in hard court competitions this year too.
In fact, in none of the five tournaments she’s played on this surface in 2022 has Jabeur managed to win three successive matches – she won a couple of rounds at four of them while crashing out in her opener in Indian Wells.

Zheng Overturns Marino Lead
Local player Rebecca Marino all but upset Zheng in the first round but for the 19-year-old’s ability to last the distance in their encounter.
In the end, the 51st-ranked Zheng survived a solid showing from Marino before winning 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 to set up a second round with Jabeur.
Zheng was broken twice in the match, both times in the first set before she mounted a comeback in the second. She got herself a break-point in the 12th game which she failed to convert but at the time managed level the encounter in the tie-breaker that followed.
In the third set, the two players went neck in neck till the sixth game before Zheng finally managed to break her opponent to take a 4-3 lead. And soon after, she completed the win off her second match-point.
Zheng had earlier gotten knocked out by Naomi Osaka in the first round of the San Jose Open but had consistently shown what she is capable of in hard court competitions this season.
Jabeur v Zheng Prediction and Tip
Jabeur might not have some of her better rhythm but she should still have enough fuel in her tank to get past Zheng. Might last three sets though.
