Camila Giorgi v Elise Mertens Head to Head
Mertens is 2-1 against the Italian. She won in Osaka and Prague in 2019 and 2020 respectively, while Giorgi won in Montreal last year.

Camila Giorgi began her title defence with a solid first round win over reigning U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu.
The World no. 29 came back from a break down thrice in the first set before going on to dominate the first set to take a one-set-to-love lead.
Raducanu began the second set well, taking a 0-2 lead, but the 30-year-old Italian didn’t drop another game winning the next six in a row to seal the contest 7-6 (7-0), 6-2.
The three-time tour-level champion, who beat Karolina Pliskova for the title last year, improved her season record to 14-13. She hasn’t had the best of seasons so far, with a run to the semifinals in Eastbourne being her best. She was also a quarterfinalist in Birmingham and made it to the last 16 at the French Open in other notable performances this year.
Having beaten the ninth seed and the World No. 10 in the opening round, Giorgi will look to keep the winning momentum going in the next round.

Mertens Holds Off Bondar
World no. 37 Elise Mertens threw away a comfortable 5-1 lead in the first set, before regrouping and holding off Anna Bondar in the opening round.
After getting off to a brisk start Mertens failed to close out the set with Bondar making a remarkable recovery, and fighting back to draw level at 5-5, while saving two set points in the 10th game.
Mertens, however, dominated the ensuing tiebreak to take a 1-0 lead and heave a sigh of relief. The Belgian was in complete control of the second set and didn’t allow Bondar to make another comeback attempt. She broke the World No. 54 thrice to win the contest 7-6 (7-2), 6-1.
The win ended Mertens’ three-match losing streak which began with a fourth round defeat at Wimbledon.
The 26-year-old, who was a quarterfinalist in 2018, improved her Canadian Open record to 5-3. Can she knock out the defending champion in the next round.
