This is a match for the ages and for a variety of reasons, not the least because the winner in this one will take the number one spot in the WTA Rankings. Two of the most popular players on the WTA circuit going up against each other makes it one to watch too as well.
It has been a while since a player won back to back Grand Slam titles; it was Serena Williams in 2015 when she won the titles at the French Open and Wimbledon. Interestingly, if Osaka wins this one she would also become the first since Jennifer Capriati to win back to back Grand Slam titles after winning their first one.
Osaka’s talent has never been a question but for someone that young to show this kind of consistency, making it to successive Grand Slam finals, has been something to write home about. Mind you, she is only 21 years old and already making waves with her on and off-court persona.

Her road to the final was punctuated by three three-setters in four matches but she came through unscathed in all of them, beating Hsieh Su-wei, Anastasija Sevastova and Karolina Pliskova, to make it through to the final. What some might say, however, is that of the opponents she has faced in the competition so far, only Elina Svitolina and Pliskova could count as those at her level of quality.
In that sense though, Kvitova has had it even easier. Other than Ash Barty, the 15th seeded Aussie, she hasn’t played a single seeded player on her path to the final. Her potential obstacles going into the final were Aryna Sabalenka in round four and second seeded Angelique Kerber in the semi-finals but both were sent packing before that happened.
The other way of looking at it is she has been winning whoever the opponent. It started with the Sydney International title victory in which she defeated both, Sabalenka and Kerber, other than Barty in the final and with six wins at the Australian Open, it’s now 11 victories in a row.
That was after she had won just six out of seven matches before starting out on her current run. All in all, an interesting match-up between the two players!
Osaka v Kvitova Head to Head
It is rather surprising that Osaka and Kvitova haven’t played each other but that could be down to Kvitova’s injury. It was in 2016 that Osaka began playing at the highest level and more regularly at that too.
Osaka v Kvitova Tips, Predictions & Odds
It comes as no surprise that the bookmakers are divided over who is the favourite going into this encounter. The Czech is marginal favourite, with the best odds for her win at 41/50 ( with Unibet here ) while the best odds for an Osaka win is 21/20 (with bet365 here) .
What we believe is this could go on to be a three-setter for which bet365 is offering 6/4.
