Jessica Pegula v Camila Giorgi Head to Head
These two have faced off four times on the WTA circuit before this and Pegula leads the head to head 3-1. This includes a 2-1 record in hard court competitions including Giorgi’s only win coming at this very tournament last season en route her title.

Starting out in the second round following her opening bye, Pegula came away a straight-set winner over Asia Muhammad to seal this meeting with Giorgi.
Pegula, who had crashed out in the second round at the Washington Open last round, defeated Muhammad 6-2, 7-5 to reach the third round. The match lasted an hour and 43 minutes.
It was Asia Muhammad who drew first blood when she broke Pegula in the first set to take a 2-0 lead but from there on it was one-way traffic in the world number seven’s favour.
She got herself three successive breaks of serve before serving out the set to love.
In the second, Asia put up a better showing and even prevented Pegula from serving it out 5-4. Pegula, however, broke her again in the 11th game before clinching the set and match to proceed further.

Giorgi Sends Mertens Packing
Elise Mertens has been struggling for form this season and especially in more recent times and defending champion Giorgi took full toll.
The Italian registered a 6-3, 7-5 win in an hour and 33 minutes despite dropping her serve three times in the encounter. In fact, what was surprising was Giorgi faced three break-points in the entire encounter and lost her serve each time.
On the other hand, the Italian broke Mertens five of the six times she had a chance to do so and ensured she was never in the danger of going down. The first set was bit of a cakewalk for Giorgi as she sped away to a 4-0 lead and while Mertens did manage to pull back on a couple of occasions with a break, the Italian eased her way through.
In the second, they exchanged breaks in the third and fourth games before a decisive break in the 11th game finished things off.
