Riske Ousts Ostapenko in Three
A day after beating two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova in a three-set opening round contest, Alison Riske needed three sets again to overpower another major champion and 16th seed Jelena Ostapenko in the second round. As a result of the win, the American advanced to the Round of 16 in Toronto for the first time in her career.
This is Riske’s seventh main draw appearance at the Canadian Open but she has never gone past the second round. On Wednesday, she finally won a Round of 32 match in Canada by defeating the 2017 French Open winner 7-6 (7-2), 0-6, 7-5.
It was the three-time tour-level champion’s 20th win of the season. She has featured in two finals this year, in Adelaide and Nottingham, but finished runner-up on both the occasions.
On Thursday, she will be aiming to reach a third quarterfinal of 2022.

Putintseva Advances Following Badosa Retirement
World No. 46 Yulia Putintseva advanced to the Round of 16 after her second round opponent and fourth seed Paula Badosa was forced to retire from the contest.
Down a break early in the first set, Putintseva came back with a double break to take a one-set-to-love lead. She then took the first game of the second set before the World no. 3 retired with an injury.
The 27-year-old, who was a semifinalist in Istanbul and Budapest this year, had comeback from a set down to beat Canada’s Katherine Sebov in the opening round.
Putintseva, who had won just one match in her previous five main draw appearances at the Canadian Open, is now just a wain away from a last eight spot, which will also be her third this season.
Riske v Putintseva Prediction and Tip
Riske is the higher-ranked player and is coming off wins over two quality opponents. She will be the favourite in this contest and should advance to the quarters.
