Pegula Takes Down Defending Champion
She lost to Camila Giorgi in the semifinals last year, but Jesica Pegula got her revenge over the 2021 champion in the Round of 16 this year. Pegula came back from a set down and then saved match point in the final set before ending Giorgi’s hopes of defending her Canadian Open title.
The seventh seed started off on a bright note, getting an early break to lead 0-2 in the first set. But the Italian took charge from that point on, going on to break Pegula thrice to go one-set up.
Pegula turned the tables in the second set, dropping just four points on her serve and bageling the World no. 29.
In the deciding set, Giorgi was the first to break to take a 2-4 lead, but Pegula broke back immediately. Giorgi then held a match point on Pegula’s serve at 4-5, but the latter saved it before breaking the Italian’s serve in the next game. She sealed the contest by holding serve to love in the next game for a 3-6, 6-0, 7-5 victory.
Pegula had a relatively easy 6-2, 7-5 victory over compatriot Asia Muhammad in the second round.
The World No. 7, who was a finalist in Madrid and a semifinalist in Miami this year, will be aiming to reach the final four for the third time this year. Her other two quarterfinal appearances this year, both came at the Grand Slams at the Australian Open and the French Open.
