Matteo Berrettini v Frances Tiafoe Head to Head
There has been one previous meeting between these two players and it was Berrettini who had come out on top in 2018 in Rome. That match came on clay.

Having returned to competitive tennis from his fitness issues, Berrettini looked to be taking the tennis world by storm in the first three tournaments he played.
Winning two of those on grass, at Stuttgart and the Queen’s Club, he missed Wimbledon because of Covid, but then returned to make it to the final of the Gstaad Open. That was a competition on clay.
The quick shift to hard court surfaces did not go too well for Berrettini though.
At the Canadian Open last week, Berrettini followed up his first round bye with a shocking straight-set loss to Pablo Carreno-Busta.
Now, Carreno-Busta is no mug with the tennis racquet but at the same time for Berrettini to capitulate to a 6-3, 6-2 defeat makes for stunning viewing. Can he shrug that loss off and start things off afresh here in the lead-up to the US Open?

Tiafoe Fell to Fritz in Montreal
While Tiafoe would have loved to do a lot better than his second round loss at Montreal, especially following the semifinal appearance in Atlanta and quarterfinal at Washington, one could blame the luck of draw for that.
Taking on fellow American and a man in form in Taylor Fritz, Tiafoe fought through to the final set before falling to 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 defeat.
He had earlier needed another three-setter against Benjamin Bonzi in his opener at the Canadian Open.
Tiafoe’s best showing at this tournament was a third round appearance in 2017, but since then there have been first, second and second round exits in Cincinnati for him. Unfortunately for the American, he comes up against a potentially top-10 player in his opener and that could make his job that much harder.
Berrettini v Tiafoe Prediction and Tip
While Berrettini is a favourite, Tiafoe’s chances of getting past his higher-ranked opponent aren’t quite low given he has had his practice on hard court surfaces in recent times. Expect Tiafoe to put up a brave show.
