Ruud Pulverizes Auger-Aliassime
World No. 7 Casper Ruud handed local favourite Felix Auger-Aliassime a straight sets shellacking in the quarterfinal of the Canadian Open on Friday.
Broken in the very first game of the match, Ruud quickly turned things around with his aggressive display, winning the next six games and taking the first set with ease.
The Norwegian continued to dominate in the second set, racing to a 4-0 lead before the Canadian got on the board, but he couldn’t find a way to break the fourth seed, going down 1-6, 2-6 in just an hour and 15 minutes.
A major difference between Ruud and the Canadian on Friday was unforced errors. The latter made 21 unforced errors, while the former made just 8.
Ruud, who won the Swiss Open title a couple of weeks ago, has now won 7 matches in a row. He began the Canadian Open campaign with a straight sets win over Alex Molcan in the second round and then came back from a set down to beat Roberto Bautista Agut 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 in the Round of 16.
The 23-year-old, who also won titles in Buenos Aires and Geneva in addition to Gstaad this year, will be playing in a third Masters semifinal this year. While he finished runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz in Miami, he fell in the semis in Rome. Can the French Open finalist reach a sixth final of the season with a win on Saturday?

Hurkacz Ends Kyrgios’s Streak
World No. 10 Hubert Hurkacz edged out the red hot Nick Kyrgios in a three-set quarterfinal on Friday to reach a second ATP 1000 semifinal in 2022.
A runner-up at Wimbledon and a winner in Washington last week, Kyrgios had won 15 of his last 16 matches; He looked in ominous touch in the tournament and remained competitive over the first two sets on Friday, but he was outclassed by the Pole in the final set.
Neither player could break in the first two sets, with Hurkacz winning the first set tiebreak and Kyrgios winning the second set tiebreak. Hurkacz, however broke the Aussie twice in the final set to seal the one-hour and 47 minute contest 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (5-7), 6-1.
Both players held six break points in the match, with Hrkacz converting 2 and saving all six. Hurkacz 20 aces to Kyrgios’ 19 and struck a total of 47 winners against the Australian’s 55. The Polish player made 11 fewer unforced errors to Kyrgios’ 24.
The victory was a third straight three-set win for Hurkacz in the tournament, who beat Emil Ruusuvuori in the second round and Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the third round.
Hurkacz is 31-13 this season. He picked his fifth career title by winning the final in Halle and was a semifinalist in Miami and Dubai. On Saturday, he will be looking to reach a second final of the year.
Ruud v Hurkacz Prediction and Tip
All of Hurkacz’s three matches have gone the distance, plus he has also been playing doubles, so he will be a bit physically and mentally drained. Ruud, meanwhile, looked in terrific form on Friday as he powered past the sixth seed and home favourite. The Pole will pose a few tough questions but eventually Ruud should come out of the contest unscathed.
