Carreno Busta Continues to Dazzle

After cruising past the first three opponents without facing a single break point, Pablo Carreno Busta was finally broken by Jack Draper in the quarterfinal of the Canadian Open. But that one break wasn’t enough for the World No. 82, as Carreno Busta stormed into the semis with yet another solid performance.

After missing out on six break points in Draper’s first two service games, Carreno Busta finally got a break in the seventh but saw the advantage wiped out by the 20-year-old qualifier, who  forced the tiebreak. The Spaniard dominated the tiebreak to take a one-set lead and then he stamped his authority in the second set to end Draper’s dream debut with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 victory.

With the win Carreno Busta entered a third Masters 1000 semifinal of his career and a first since the Miami Open in 2018. The 31-year-old has been in top form during the tournament.

He began the his campaign with a 6-3, 6-2 defeat of 11th seed Matteo Berrettini in opening round, and then dispatched Holger Rune 6-0, 6-3 in the second round. His biggest win of the tournament came in the Round of 16 as he trounced the seventh seed Jannik Sinner 6-2, 6-4.

With the four wins, Carreno Busta improved his season record to 26-17. The 31-year-old reached his 11th ATP final in Barcelona earlier this year, but couldn’t add to his six previous titles. On Saturday, he will be playing in a third semifinal of the year with hopes of reaching a second final.

Evans Rallies to Down Paul

Outplayed in the first set, World No. 39 Daniel Evans made a fine comeback to stop America’s Tommy Paul in the quarterfinals on Friday.

The Briton, who was a quarterfinalist in Washington last week, will now be featuring in the second tour-level semifinal of the season, following his final four finish at the start of the year in Sydney.

Evans hit just 17 winners to Paul’s 41 and won just 85 points, three fewer than the American’s 88 in the entire match, but he got the all-important solitary breaks in the second and third sets to beat the World No. 34, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 in two hours and 18 minutes.

It’s the third time that the 32-year-old has needed three sets this week. He had begun his Canadian Open challenge with a 6-2, 1-6, 6-0 victory over Filip Krajinovic and then defeated Taylor Fritz 7-6 (7-5), 1-6, 7-5 in a two-hour-and-44-minute Round of 16 thriller.

The only match that Evans won in straight sets was his stunning second round upset of fifth seed Andrey Rublev. The Briton had beaten the Russian 6-4, 6-4.

This is just the second time that Evans is in a Masters 1000 semifinal. Can he keep his winning run going?
