Pablo Carreno Busta v Dan Evans
Nobody really expected Evans or Carreno Busta to be there but both of them played some incredible tennis to secure a spot in the semi-final. Carreno Busta once again demonstrated his love for North American hard courts as he’s once again playing well on them. The Spaniard had some superb matches in Montreal beating the likes of Matteo Berrettini, Jannik Sinner and Jack Draper all in straight sets.
Some of those sets featured beatdowns and showcased a high level of belief in himself. It’s a good sight for him because it’s not been the best of years. A final could certainly boost his confidence similar to the way the Olympic Games did last year. 26-17 on the year and 13-5 on hard courts so far with a chance to go to the final.
Waiting there is Dan Evans who played some of his best tennis as well. The Brit had an equally trick draw and his wins were quite impressive as well. Filip Krajinovic, Andrey Rublev, Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul all failed to beat him. The final two went to three sets with him but once again failed to outlast the hard-battling Evans.
His defensive game leaves players having to overhit and he was able to frustrate all of them enough so that they start making mistakes. It will be tough to do against Carreno Busta as I expect him to be smarter than that. A trick 3-setter but expect Pablo to pull through.
Tip: Carreno Busta to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
Jessica Pegula v Simona Halep
A very fascinating matchup awaits us when Jessica Pegula takes on Simona Halep. Two players who never played against each other with a chance to go to the final. Halep will certainly be keen on getting this win as it’s been a while since she was able to compete for a huge title. She has high ambitions and it was good to see things fall into place for her.
It’s been far from perfect as her match against Coco Gauff demonstrated but she’s doing enough to keep winning matches. Halep is 36-10 on the year but without any notable trophy to show off and that’s a problem. She always makes these deep runs but then stumbles inches away from the final.
Pegula will be a different challenge as she will be able to keep up with Halep in terms of attacking. The US player doesn’t know much else and when she’s in rhythm it’s fascinating to watch. The key will be how Halep deals with her 2nd serve as it gave her too much trouble against Gauff. Pegula will punish her for it so it needs to be better.
I think Halep will face her issues as she did in most matches here but I also think she will raise above those issues to win the match. Not sure whether it’s in three or two sets but I think Halep does get the win.
Tip: Halep to win: 4/6 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
Casper Ruud v Hubert Hurkacz
Casper Ruud and Hubert Hurkacz are an interesting matchup due to the similar playstyle and consistency. Both Ruud and Hurkacz love their serve + forehand combination with the Polish player having a better serve and Ruud the better forehand. Both will like to keep the points short here and I do expect it to be soo.
Hurkacz has a slight advantage due to his serve as it adds a dimension that Ruud doesn’t yet have a consistent basis. Both of them were a bit lucky in the quarter-finals as they got players that kind of threw matches away. Hurkacz faced Nick Kyrgios and got the decider gifted by the Australian who practically quit. Ruud faced Auger-Aliassime who never showed up to the match.
Another thing to consider in this matchup is the fatigue level of Hurkacz. The Polish player played a couple of lengthy matches so far this week as well as playing the doubles while Ruud mostly focused on the singles. The Norwegian looked quite engaged in his match against Auger as well.
Ruud also won their only meeting this year at Roland Garros in four sets. So there is certainly a way for Hurkacz to hurt him. The kye will be to keep the mistakes at a low level and serve well. If he can do that it will be close but I do think that Ruud will ultimately prevail.
Tip: Ruud to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
