At the start of 2022, Alize Cornet had plans to retire at the end of the season, but some sensational performances may have delayed those intentions.
The 32-year-old stunned the Melbourne crowd at the Australian Open in January by making it through to her first Major quarter-final, at the 65th time of asking. She defeated the likes of Simona Halep and Garbine Muguruza, both former finalists at the tournament.
Cornet followed up a staggering run down under with a 3rd round showing at Roland Garros, beating defending champion Jelena Ostapenko. But the best win of her year came at Wimbledon, where she took out world number one Iga Swiatek, snapping her 37-match winning streak. If she could beat Stephens in the opening round, Cornet would meet the Pole once again.
Cornet showed signs of her 2022 form in Toronto last week with a solid win over her in-form compatriot Caroline Garcia, and went out in the second round against home favourite and former champion Bianca Andreescu. Her grittiness could be enough to get her over the line against Stephens this week.

Can Stephens Rediscover Major Winning Form?
Sloane Stephens is in need of some positive results this week, before her favourite Grand Slam comes around in New York. She certainly enjoys the energy from a home crowd, considering four of her seven WTA titles have come in the United States.
2022 has been yet another confusing year for the American. Besides winning the title in Guadalajara in February, and reaching the quarter finals at Roland Garros, Stephens has won just two other matches. One of those was last week in Toronto, where she defeated Sofia Kenin.
The 29-year-old might be sick of the sight of a French opponent in the opening round in Cincinnati, after losing two years on the bounce to Caroline Garcia. However, she has made the semi-finals here before, and often finds inspiration from nowhere.
Cornet v Stephens Prediction and Tip
Cornet has been sensational at Grand Slam level this year, but her results elsewhere flatter to deceive. Despite the inconsistent results shown by Stephens, the American should be buoyed by a home crowd, and is a slight favourite to set up a fascinating meeting with Iga Swiatek in round two.
