One would have expected a slightly better performance from the Wimbledon winner Rybakina but it’s safe to say she hasn’t rediscovered her rhythm since that title victory run.
Having gone into the San Jose Open as a favourite in her first round match against Daria Kasatkina, she took the first set there but looked clueless in the next two as she went down 6-2, 6-0. Later she blamed that loss to her lack of preparation.
What she was prepared to do was to fight it out though, as she took both Marie Bouzkova and Cori Gauff to three sets in the two matches too follow at the Canadian Open. One, she won, the other she lost.
Now, coming up against a player ranked far lower than her and one who has won just one career match in a WTA 1000 competition, Rybakina will hope to register an expansive win as she prepares for the start of the US Open in two weeks’ time.

Sherif 1-9 in Hard Court Competitions
A hard court isn’t the kind of surface Sherif has ever excelled on and this year has been no exception for the Egyptian.
She has featured in 10 matches on it in 2022 and won just one – a win that came in Monterrey against the 262nd-ranked Seone Mendez. Other than that, Sherif has won a mere three sets on hard courts.
And while she has won a title already this year – it came on the clay courts of Karlsruhe – it has so far done nothing to improve her confidence on hard courts. She was crushed 6-4, 6-1 by Donna Vekic in the first round of Washington Open and opted not to feature in Toronto.
