Anett Kontaveit v Tereza Martincova Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came on the clay courts of the 2017 Gstaad Open where Kontaveit registered a straight-set victory.

Kontaveit Coming off Opening Shock Loss

Having gone into the Canadian Open as the second seed like she is in this competition, Kontaveit fell at her very first hurdle.

Following a first round bye, the Estonian lost to Jil Teichmann and that in straight sets to crash out of the tournament. That defeat had followed a quarterfinal loss in Prague, also played on a hard court surface, and to the unheralded Anastasia Potapova 6-1, 6-1.

What makes these results a tad surprising is Kontaveit’s performances in hard court tournaments earlier this year pointed to good form and solidity. A title win indoors at St. Petersburg Open aside, she had also made the semifinal of the Sydney International and was the losing finalist in Doha.

Here, she started off with a bye too and now faces a tricky opponent if one gets too complacent or rusty against her. Can Kontaveit shrug off both those debilitating characteristics to storm into the next round?

Qualifier Martincova Stalls Parrizas Diaz

Martincova hasn’t been in the best of form in recent times but in defeating Irina Begu and Magda Linette in the qualifiers despite going into both those matches as a second-favourite, looked to have done more than her bit.

In her opener against Nuria Parrizas Diaz, Martincova conceded the first set in a tie-breaker but came back to squeak past her opponent and set up this meeting against Kontaveit.

The match lasted two hours and 38 minutes and saw Martincova drop her serve five times but in turn break her opponent on eight separate occasions.

This was her eighth win on this surface for the season but that goes with 10 defeats as well which gives us an indication how tough it could get for the Czech against the world number two.

Kontaveit v Martincova Prediction and Tip

While Kontaveit hasn’t been at her sharpest in recent times, she starts off here as a strong favourite to make it through. Rustiness could be bit of a factor that makes the world number two stretch but she should still come through in straight sets.

Tip: Kontaveit to win in straight sets: 10/11 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
