Cameron Norrie v Andy Murray Head to Head

They have faced off once before this and that match came in 2019. Murray had defeated Norrie in three sets at the Beijing Open that season.

Norrie Huffs & Puffs Past Rune

It wasn’t the most straightforward of victories but Norrie would be glad he managed to put his first round opponent Holger Rune out and set up this meeting with Murray.

In a match lasting two hours and 35 minutes, Norrie registered a 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-4 win over Rune despite losing his serve four times in the encounter. In fact there wasn’t much to choose between the two players with Norrie also breaking his opponent on four occasions with that first set tie-breaker proving to be the difference.

Rune was up a break in the opening set but was broken soon after and then lost the set-point in the tie-breaker off his own serve.

He stormed right back with an early break in the second set but Norrie was able to put pressure on the Rune serve when he served at 4-5 to stay in the match in the third set.

Norrie will now look to continue his good form for the season, knowing Murray might have beaten him in the past but on current form he has the game to topple the former world number one.

Murray Beats Old Foe Stan

Stan Wawrinka and Murray have played on nearly a couple of dozen occasions in the past and the Brit had a slight advantage on head to head over his opponent. He widened that gap by overcoming Wawrinka in three difficult sets to move into the second round.

Following on from a three-match losing streak which included opening losses at both Washington and Montreal, Murray needed nearly three hours to get past Wawrinka. He won 7-6 (3), 5-7, 7-5 to enter round two.

In a match where both players earned themselves three breaks of serves, it was Murray’s superior play in the opening set tie-breaker that proved to be the difference.

Without any breaks of serves in the first set, Murray ran away to a 4-1 lead in the tie-breaker and pulled off a 7-3 victory. In the second set, Wawrinka had a chance to serve it out at 5-3 but eventually won it with a break when Murray served to stay in the set at 5-6.

Down 0-2 in the third, Murray rallied back to pull it to 5-5 and then broke Wawrinka again before clinching it on his serve off the fourth match-point he had. Norrie might not afford him those many chances.

Norrie v Murray Prediction and Tip

Younger legs, better form and much more confidence – all of this combine to have Norrie starting out as a huge favourite. Expect a straight-set win for him.
