In what was a delight for tennis fans worldwide, reigning US Open champion Emma Raducanu beat the former world number one, 23-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams 6-4, 6-0, to reach round two.
It was Williams’ last career match in Cincinnati, but for Raducanu, she is just getting started. A win like that ought to do wonders for her confidence as she now sets her sight on taking down another number one player.
Now ranking World No. 13, it hasn’t been the best of seasons for the 19-year-old British, but the important thing is she is gaining much-needed experience and exposure at the top tier.
Her season highlights are a quarterfinal run in Stuttgart, Washington, and a third-round appearance in Madrid. Raducanu last played in Toronto, where she lost to Camila Giorgi in the opener.

Azarenka Outlasts Kanepi
Victoria Azarenka, current World No. 22, started off on a shaky note in Cinci as she beat Kaia Kanepi 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
As a two-time champion here, with her most recent title coming in 2020, 33-year-old Azarenka boasts of a solid pedigree when compared to Raducanu. However, she has been on shaky grounds this season, with her tally standing at 16-9.
The Belarusian has reached the mid-rounds in a handful of tournaments but hasn’t quite managed to entirely go the distance. In her last two tournaments – the French Open and Citi Open, Victoria fell in the third round to Jil Teichmann and Xiyu Wang, respectively.
In fact, Azarenka has seen her fair share of losses this year to rising young stars, effectively setting a precedent for Raducanu to build upon.
That said, she is a five-time Grand Slam finalist (two titles, three runner-ups) and has 35+ WTA career finals to her name. This kind of experience certainly makes her a force to be reckoned with.
Azarenka v Raducanu Prediction and Tip
Raducanu is poised to upset here, but a lot will depend on her consistency and ability to keep the momentum going. Azarenka will need to be careful with this one. Expect an exciting match of tennis.
