Jessica Pegula, starting with a bye into round two, is certainly among the favourites to reach the latter rounds in Cincinnati.
She last played in Toronto, where she made it to the semifinal before losing to Simona Halep. It has been a fantastic season for the 28-year-old American, who cracked the top 10 and peaked at World No. 7 (current ranking is #8).
Pegula was a runner-up in Madrid, a quarterfinalist in the Australian Open and French Open, and a semifinalist in Miami.
Apart from this, she also won four doubles titles across Melbourne, Doha, Washington, and Toronto. Jessica was a runner-up in the French Open doubles as well.
With her tally now at 29-15 – backed by an incredible pedigree – Kostyuk faces a Herculean task of winning here.

Kostyuk Upsets Giorgi
20-year-old, current World No. 74 Marta Kostyuk dispatched the veteran Italian Camila Giorgi in the first round with 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.
She started off as a qualifier and beat the likes of Jasmine Paolini and Magdalena Frech to make it to the main draw.
Playing in her first tournament since Wimbledon (round two loss to Shuai Zhang), this result also matches her best showing in WTA 1000 events as she made it to round two in Miami, Indian Wells, and Madrid. However, Kostyuk never made it past that stage.
The youngster is in the process of building her form and momentum, and with not enough experience to back her play, she will need to bring her best foot forward when she takes on Pegula.

This match is Pegula’s to lose, especially given that she is playing at home. At the very most, Kostyuk may put up a fight and resistance but ultimately, the seeded star should come through.
