Top-seeded Garbine Muguruza of Spain will face Germany’s Sabine Lisicki in her opening round encounter at the WTA Hua Hin competition that kick-started on Monday.

Muguruza Gradually Improving
While the Spaniard fell in the fourth round at the Australian Open, losing to the eventual semi-finalist Karolina Pliskova, there were signs of improving form in the tournament.
She defeated Saisai Zheng and Timea Bacsinzsky in straight sets and while she was stretched by Johanna Konta in round two, her three-set win over the British player spoke volumes about how she was ready for a fight as well.
Her issues against the top-quality players were exposed in the Pliskova match, but with growing confidence, she should be back to her best soon enough. For now though, she is up against an opponent who shouldn’t trouble her too much.
Former World Number 12 Faces Injury Woes
Ranked 12th in the world in 2012, Lisicki has faced injury trouble for some time now, so much so that she has fallen outside the top 200. She needs to feature in qualifiers to make it to main draws of competitions, including at the Grand Slams and for three majors in a row, including this year’s Australian Open, she hasn’t made the main draw.
Now, with a wild-card to participate at this Thailand Open, Lisicki will know she is up against a tough opponent, an opponent that is out for a kill because of her own recent problems with form and one who wouldn’t want to give an inch.
It would be a difficult climb back for the German but if she can push her opponent really hard, that might give her a boost going into the rest of the year even if it doesn’t give her too many ranking points.
