Elise Mertens v Caroline Garcia Head to Head

World No. 33 Elise Mertens knocked out 2016 champion and last year’s semifinalist Karoline Pliskova in the second round on Wednesday.
The Belgian saw the Czech come back from a break down twice in the opening set before taking it in the tiebreak. She didn’t face a single break point in the second set while she broke once to reach the third round with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 victory.
Mertens had made a brisk start in the tournament, handing Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina a 6-1, 6-1 drubbing in the first round.
Now the Belgian is just a win from reaching her third quarterfinal this year. While Mertens has featured in six doubles finals this year winning the only title in Dubai, she hasn’t been able to deliver results on a consistent basis in singles. She made it to the last eight in St. Petersburg and Strasbourg but the last 16 in all the three majors but has not been able to go deeper.
She has started off well in Cincinnati. Can she win another on Thursday and reach her third Cincinnati quarterfinal? Her best here was a semifinal finish in 2020.

Garcia Pips Sakkari
Caroline Garcia continued her charge at the Cincinnati Open, edging past Maria Sakkari and reaching the third round for the third time in what is her eighth attempt.
The Frenchwoman had qualified for this year’s main draw with tough three-set qualifying round wins over Diane Parry and Andrea Petkovic respectively. She continued her super showing in the first round, knocking out Petra Martic 6-3, 6-3.
Against Sakkari, the first two sets went the distance with the two sharing the spoils. Garcia completely dominated the third to top the fourth seed 7-6 (7-2), 6-7 (6-8), 6-1.
Garcia has displayed great form this year. The Frenchwoman has won two of her nine WTA titles in 2022, triumphing in Bad Homburg and the Poland Open.
Overall the 28-year-old has a 29-15 season record. On Thursday she will be aiming to reach a seventh WTA quarterfinal of her career.
