Pegula Powers Past Raducanu
Jessica Pegula continued to build on her impressive season with a straight sets win over Emma Raducanu in the Round of 16 on Thursday.
The seventh seed American won 81% points on the back of her first serve, saved 2 of the 3 break points that she faced and capitalised on 3 of 9 breaking chances for a 7-5, 6-4 victory over the reigning U.S. Open champion, who had beaten two legends in Serena Williams and Vitoria Azarenka in the past two rounds.
With the win, the World No. 8 has now advanced to a fourth WTA 1000 quarterfinal this year. She was a finalist in Madrid and a semifinalist in Miami and the Canadian Opens.
Pegula, who had rallied past Marta Kostyuk 6-7 (5-7), 6-1, 6-2 in the second round, is 31-15 this season.
With 34 wins in WTA 1000 tournaments since the start of last year, Pegula is just two wins behind World No. 1 Iga Swiatek’s tour-leading 36 wins. This is also Pegula’s eighth quarterfinal appearance in a WTA 1000 event since 2021, which is the most by any player during this period. She is now aiming to reach the final four for the second consecutive week.

Garcia’s Hot Form Continues
Facing Pegula will be a resurgent Caroline Garcia, who has exhibited top form this year and continues to climb back the rankings.
Her latest success came over Elise Mertens in the Round of 16 in Cincinnati, which propelled her into the quarterfinals for the first time in her eighth main draw appearance in the tournament.
The World No. 35 was broken in the very first game of the match, but she bounced back with a double break to take the opening set. She broke early in the second set as well, but the Belgian pulled the break back. However, the 28-year-old Frenchwoman broke again in the final game for a 6-4, 7-5 win.
A former No. 4, Garcia had begun the season at No. 74. But thanks to her consistency over the last couple of months, she has made considerable gains in the rankings.
The World No. 35 won the titles in Bad Homburg (grass) and the Poland Open (clay) to take her count of career titles to 9. Friday’s quarterfinal will be her seventh of the season.
Garcia had qualified for the main draw in Cincinnati with wins over Diane Parry and Andrea Petkovic. She kept the momentum going with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Petra Martic in the first round and then battled past fourth seed Maria Sakari in a three-set second round contest. She continued her hot form in the round of 16 on Thursday, thus improving to 21-4 from her last 25 matches.
Pegula v Garcia Prediction and Tip
Pegula is 3-0 in WTA 1000 quarterfinals this season and the World No. 8 looks set to reach her fourth semifinal at that level this year. It won’t be simple against Garcia, but the American should emerge in three.
