With two WTA titles and runner-up finish, Clara Tauson was won of the bright young stars of last season, but the 19-year-old has struggled with injury and form this year.
The Dane is 9-11 overall and 9-9 on hard courts. As far as her recent form goes, she lost in the opening rounds in Washington and Cincinnati and was a quarterfinalist at the WTA 125 in Concord.
The World no. 47 had started the season well, reaching the quarterfinals in Melbourne Summer Set 2 and also winning the first two matches at the Australian Open, but she couldn’t keep the form going, making early exits from the tournaments that followed.
She suffered a back injury in Madrid, which kept her out for two months. Her return at Wimbledon lasted just five games as she retired with the same injury, only to return this month.
Tauson will be looking to recapture the form that saw her win titles in Lyon and Luxembourg last year and finish runner-up in Courmayeur. She had also won a WTA 125 in Chicago in 2021.

Tan Comes Through Qualifiers
World No. 111 Harmony Tan qualified for the main draw with a 7-5, 6-4 win over America’s Jessie Aney in the second qualifying round on Sunday.
The Frenchwoman, who made it to the fourth round of Wimbledon on her debut this year, had beaten Aldila Sutjiadi 6-3, 7-5 in the first qualifying round on Saturday.
An eight-time champion from 17 ITF finals, Tan was at her best in Wimbledon this year, where she ousted Serena Williams in the first round. In another significant result, she made it to the semifinals of the WTA 125 in Gaiba. But apart from these two grass court performances, Tan has struggled to win matches on a consistent basis.
The 24-year-old has not won consecutive main draw matches in any of the other tournaments. But she has knack of raising her game against quality opponents. Other than Serena, some big names that she has beaten this year include Yulia Putintseva, Madison Keys and Sara Sorribes Tormo (all in the top 50).
She is 19-19 overall and 11-9 on hard courts, across levels, this season. Can she carry the winning momentum of the qualifying rounds into the first round?

Tauson is the favourite in this contest. Tan has shown in the past that she can surprise higher-ranked opponents, so the Dane will be tested in the opener, but eventually she should comes progress into the next round.
