Steve Johnson v Pedro Martinez
Pedro Martinez defeated Steve Johnson two years ago in New York but that is not expected to happen this time around. Johnson is a heavy favourite in this matchup simply because he played better recently. The American has had some solid wins in the last week which can’t be said for Martinez.
His last win came on July 27th and it was on clay. Since then he played two hard court matches and he lost both of them. The Spaniard is generally a fairly solid hard-court player, not as good as he is on clay but good enough to win matches.
Johnson will make it really tough for him as he has the ability to serve well and he’s not shy of going forward as well. Playing at home is always a big thing for Americans and they generally play their best tennis when back home. Johnson is no different so expect him to get this done.
Tip: Johnson to win: 4/6 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
Sofia Kenin v Irina Begu
Sofia Kenin won a match and it was a pretty solid in against a youngster. Losing that match would have been a disaster for Kenin but the implications of her win are important. She’s battling a lot of confidence issues after making her return to the Tour and losing multiple matches.
It’s a process and she knows that but getting that elusive win could do wonders for her. Unfortunately, she faces a player who played so well in Cleveland last year. Begu is a very tricky player with a good game and a strong record this year 24-14.
It’s highly unlikely that Kenin will be able to push Begu around so this is a matchup that she would not have liked even if she has been in peak form. The Romanian is expected to put Kenin under a lot of pressure and if history is anything to go by, Kenin won’t handle it well.
Tip: Begu to win: 4/5 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
Grigor Dimitrov v Dominic Thiem
Getting this matchup in round two of an ATP 250 is truly amazing but it also means somebodies US Open prep will be cut short. Dominic Thiem would really benefit from winning this match for several reasons but it will be a tricky thing to do against Dimitrov who leads the H2H 4-3.
Thiem secured a huge win for him over J.J. Wolf in round one and it was a good return to hard courts for him. It was not an easy win but one that will give him confidence moving forward. The same thing is needed for Dimitrov as he’s lacked it in recent weeks, especially with two losses in a row.
They played a couple of times before, they know how the other one plays so there will be no surprises here. Dimitrov should hold the edge here but I’m not very comfortable in backing him to win. Too many times has he lost matches he should have won so I’ll resort to a close 3-set match.
Tip: Three sets in the match: 5/4 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
