After making it all the way through to the quarterfinals at Wimbledon and losing to Rafael Nadal in a match many thought was his for the taking, some of the wind seemed to have gone off the Fritz sails.
Or at least so it seemed when he won his opener and then lost the very next match to Dan Evans at the Washington Open.
He did better at the Canadian Open with victories over Andy Murray and Frances Tiafoe but for the second week in running, the American was no match for Dan Evans in the round of 16.
It was finally at the Cincinnati Masters that Frtiz finally seemed to have found his own, defeating Nick Kyrgios and Andrey Rublev en route the quarterfinal. There he went down to Daniil Medvedev in straight sets.
Fritz has shown he can compete with some of the top players in the world and a good start here with some luck from the draw could see him get deep into a competition he has never gone beyond round three.

Holt on Grand Slam Debut
It’s taken Holt a while to make it through but he has finally entered the main draw of a major. And he did so the hard way, winning three qualifying rounds in three sets apiece.
First he overcame Alexandre Muller, then defeated the favourite Emilo Gomez before edging past Dimitar Kuzmanov to seal his berth.
What makes this performance even more special is Holt was playing Futures competitions regularly till the first quarter of this season, and even in May entered his name in a few tournaments on that circuit.
Five Futures titles looked to have helped him make it to the Challengers and here he is, entering the main draw of a Grand Slam as his first ever match at the highest level.
