Andrey Rublev v Laslo Djere Head to Head

There has been only one previous meeting between these two at the highest level and it came at the Bastad Open earlier this year.

Rublev had won that match on clay in straight sets.

Two previous Challenger matches in 2015 and 2016 had resulted in a win apiece for the two players, again on clay.

Rublev Under-Par in the US Open Series

Having almost missed the entire grass court swing, Rublev returned to action with a couple of tournaments on clay in July but his eyes would have been on the big prize at the US Open this season.

Unfortunately for him, however, things haven’t quite looked as rosy as he would have liked it to during the US Open Series.

While three straight-set wins did land him in the semifinal of the Washington Open, Rublev was then shocked by Yoshihito Nishioka in that round. A bye at the Canadian Open later, Rublev lost in the second round to Dan Evans while struggling to win a round at the Cincinnati Masters that followed.

Rublev defeated Fabio Fognini in a fighting three-setter there before losing to Taylor Fritz in the third round.

For a player who has won three titles this season including two on hard courts, this has been tough going and he will hope to shrug that off with a strong start here.

Djere Coming off Solid Winston-Salem Showing

Djere is known for his clay court performances, having won two titles on that surface in his career. On hard courts, however, Djere hasn’t done much of note in his career, other than what happened last week in Winston-Salem.

In what turned out to be Djere’s best hard court campaign of his career, the Serb overcame five opponents in successive matches to make it to the final of the tournament.

And while he went down to Adrian Mannarino in that title-decider, Djere will know it could fire him up for the rest of the season.

While playing against Rublev will be a totally different kettle of fish to the kind of opponents he encountered in Winston-Salem, he will also know the Russian hasn’t been in very good form and that could give him some chance at disruption.

Rublev v Djere Prediction and Tip

Rublev has been tipped to win this at 1/12 and while we think he should come through here, it might not quite be a straightforward victory. Could see a long three-setter or even four sets in the encounter.
