Xiyu Wang battled past a determined Jamie Loeb in the opening round of the Granby Open on Tuesday.
The 21-year-old Chinese player, who has been impressive this season, edged the opening set in a tiebreak, before losing the second set in another tiebreak. She took charge of the third set though, stamping her authority to seal the two hour and 46 minute contest 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (5-7), 6-2. The lefty struck as many 12 aces in the match and won 75% points on the back of her first serve.
A couple of weeks ago, Wang had made it to the semifinals of the Washington Open falling to Liudmilla Samsonova.
Tuesday’s win improved her season record to 35-19 across levels. She reached her maiden WTA 125 final this year, finishing runner-up in Valencia and also featured in three ITF finals, but remains without a trophy in 2022.

Brace Upsets Seventh Seed Juvan
World No. 646 Cadence brace made a stunning WTA debut as she upset seventh seed Kaja Juvan in the first round on Tuesday.
Brace, who qualified for a tour-level main draw for the first time, came back from a break down in both the sets to beat the World No. 70, 7-5, 6-3.
The Canadian had beaten India’s Karman Kaur Thandi in the first qualifying round and then knocked out Nadiia Kichenok in the second qualifying round.
The 17-year-old had reached her maiden ITF final in Paraguay in April, finishing runner-up in the clay court tournament. She has not gone beyond the Round of 16 in the other tournaments, but a first round win over a top player on her tour debut would have been a huge confidence booster. Can she cause another upset on Wednesday?
