Sabalenka Reaches Career-Best Ranking
The 20-year-old Belarusian, who received a bye into the second round, has started her week St. Petersburg with a massive boost of confidence. On Monday, she became the World No. 10 for the first time following her superb spell in the opening weeks of the year.
She first appeared in Shenzhen, where she won the tournament after defeating the likes of Maria Sharapova and Alison Riske. While she lost early in Sydney, she moved on to reach the third round in the Australian Open where she lost to Amanda Anisimova.
Sabalenka rose to prominence as recently as last year, when she won the Connecticut Open and Wuhan Open, after reaching the finals in Lugano and Eastbourne. That superb spell definitely put her in the spotlight and so far, she has continued to shine.
Van Uytvanck’s Rocky Start to the Year
On one hand, Sabalenka received a boost in the rankings while on the other, her Belgian adversary moved several rows down the table. She is currently the World No. 52 after failing to perform well in the last few matches.
The best she could do was reach the second round in the Hobart International, where she lost to Anna Karolina Schmiedlova. As for her run in Melbourne, she lost the opening match to Caroline Wozniacki.
Van Uytvanck is not the most consistent player on the tour although, she has the ability to surprise her opponents. Last season, she reached the semifinal in Linz and fourth round in the Wimbledon. She also won the title in Budapest, right around the same time.
Sabalenka v Uytvanck Head to Head
Their upcoming fixture in St. Petersburg will be their second meeting on the WTA Tour. They last met in the 2018 WTA Mallorca, where the Belgian defeated Sabalenka in three sets.
Sabalenka v Uytvanck – Who Will Win?
On paper, the young Belarusian will start this match as the favourite to win. She has the odds stacked in her favour owing to her recent form and her brilliant run in the previous season. It is hard to imagine Alison Van Uytvanck knock out the fourth seed so early.
