28-year-old Daria Saville is having a moment in Quebec as she swatted away her opening-round opponents with absolute ease.
In the first match, she dispatched Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 6-3, 6-3; in round two, she brushed aside Katherine Sebov 6-1, 6-0.
A few weeks ago, the current World No. 73 was a semifinalist in the Citi Open where she fell to Kaia Kanepi, but not before upsetting the top seed Jessica Pegula in straight sets. Saville also had a moment in the Miami Open where she was the lowest-ranked quarterfinalist (competing as #249).
Apart from this, she made it to the round of 16 in Indian Wells – as a qualifier. In that tournament, Saville defeated a handful of big names like Shuai Zhang, Ons Jabeur, and Elise Mertens.
Needless to say, a moment like this has been long in the making for Daria.

Wang, Looking Confident
21-year-old Xiyu Wang has had quite a campaign in the Granby Bank Championships. In the first round, she survived a rocky three-setter with Jamie Loeb (7-6(4), 6-7(5), 6-2) and followed it with a clinical 7-6(4), 6-1 win over Cadence Brace.
These two wins have taken Wang’s record for the year to 36-19. Most recently, she played in Washington where, as a qualifier, she made it to the final four after beating veterans like Tatjana Maria, Donna Vekic, and Victoria Azarenka.
In addition, Xiyu was the runner-up in three ITF finals and one Challenger event (all on clay).
In fact, her recent results in the US Open swing are the first time in 2022 that the young Chinese has shown any semblance of form on hard courts.

This match is ideally Saville’s to lose; she is experienced, has a superior pedigree, and is in fine form. Wang, on her part, is well equipped to put up a fight and can even cause the upset – but that will take some doing.
