This will be a first meeting between the two.

Kyrgios In Top Form
It’s been a brilliant season for Nick Kyrgios and he will be backing himself to have a great run in the tournament, particularly after his runner-up finish at Wimbledon. However, he finds himself in a very tough draw, and could face the top seed Daniil Medvedev in a potential third round clash.
Kyrgios has a 3-1 head-to-head record against the World No. 1 and they are 1-1 this year. While Medvedev won at the Australian Open, Kyrgios won the most recent battle at the Canadian Open, coming back from a set down to beat the Russian in three.
If all goes to plan, this third round matchup could be the most entertaining fixture of the tournament, but let’s not look that far just yet and focus on Kyrgios’ opener against his good mate Thanasi Kokkinakis, with whom he won his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open this year. The pair also won the Atlanta Open doubles title recently.
Now they come face-to-face for the first time in singles and Kyrgios is set to have the upper hand.
Kyrgios, who won his first title in three years at the Washington Open earlier this month, had reached his first final since 2019 at Wimbledon, only to fall to Novak Djokovic. The World no. 26 is 31-9 this year and has made at least the quarterfinals in seven of the 11 tournaments he has featured in.
At the U.S. Open, the 27-year-old has an 8-8 record and has never gone past the Round of 32, having reached that stage four times. This is precisely the stage where his 2022 campaign could also come to an end as he may face the defending champion in that round. But this year, Kyrgios is playing at a different level and will be a huge threat for the top seed.

Kokkinakis Lacking Consistency
Thanasi Kokkinakis had a great start to the season down under, winning the Adelaide-2 title for his maiden ATP triumph. He was also a semifinalist in Adelaide-1 and won his first Grand Slam doubles title with Kyrgios at the Australian Open.
But since that start the World no. 70 has struggled for consistency. He did reach the Round of 16 in Miami and the quarterfinals in Geneva but also had made a number of early exits. Overall he is 16-12 this year, but his recent form hasn’t been good. Since making a second round exit from Wimbledon, Kokkinkis has played three tournaments in the Americas, but has won just one main draw match in the three tournaments.
At the U.S. Open, the 26-year-old has a 1-2 record, with his only win coming in 2019. he had to withdraw from the tournament thereafter.
So neither form nor past results favour Kokkinakis in the opener. It will be a huge surprise if he is able to stun Kyrgios in the first round.
Kyrgios v Kokkinakis Prediction and Tip
The in-form Kyrgios is a heavy favourite. While Kokkinakis could lift his game and take a set of the 23rd seed, the latter should eventually advance to the next round.
