Basilashvili on a Five-Match Losing Streak
It’s been a difficult year for World No. 35 Nikoloz Basilashvili, who brings a 12-24 season record to what will be his seventh main draw appearance at the U.S. Open.
Basilashvili has featured in 11 hard court tournaments this year, but has won just three matches on the surfaces and all those three wins came in Doha, where he reached the final, to finish runner-up to Roberto Bautista Agut. In all he has lost 13 matches on the surface, suffering the most recent defeat to Thiago Monteiro in Winston-Salem.
Coming to the U.S. Open in that sort of form won’t be encouraging for the 30-year-old. In his past appearances at Flushing Meadows, Basilashvili reached the fourth round in 2018 and the third rounds in 2019 and 2021.
He will be hoping for his fortunes to change in the final Grand Slam of the season, all he needs to start well and then build from there.

Wu Creates History
China’s Wu Yibing, and compatriot Zhang Zhizhen, became the first two Chinese men to qualify for the U.S. Open. No Chinese man has ever competed in the main draw at Flushing Meadows in the Open Era.
Wu Yibing, who won the U.S. Open boy’s singles and doubles titles in 2017, defeated Corentin Moutet in straight sets in the third qualifying round on Friday to make history for his country.
Wu had beaten Ricardas Berankis 6-4, 6-3 in the first qualifying round and then rallied from a set down to dispatch Italy’s Stefano Travaglia 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 in the second qualifying round before powering past Moutet with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 victory.
Ranked No. 178 Wu has won three Challenger titles, all on hard courts this year. He also one a clay court ITF event in 2022.
The 22-year-old will be playing his first tour level match of the season on Monday. Overall he is 4-8 at the top level, having played all his 12 matches on hard courts.
Basilashvili v Wu Prediction and Tip
With Basilashvili struggling throughout the season and Wu coming off wins against players who have all been in the top 100 not long ago, this becomes an interesting matchup. Wu may stretch the Georgian to five sets in the contest, but eventually Basilashvili’s experience should help him survive.
