Having reached the final of the 2021 US Open, a lot was expected out of Fernandez this year but she has not been at her best. Her record for the season does suggest she hasn’t been way off the mark but with 15 wins and 10 defeats to go with that, it does not exhibit the kind you would expect from a world number 14.
Fernandez also does not have too much form going her way at the US Open Series.
Having featured in the two WTA 1000 competitions, in Canada and Cincinnati, Fernandez won just one round between those two.
At the Canadian Open, which is her home tournament, Fernandez was sent packing in the second round by Beatriz Haddad Maia. And then in the Cincinnati opener, Ekaterina Alexandrova got the better of her in straight sets.
Both times, it was the Canadian who had gone into the match as a strong favourite.
She will hope she can push those performances out of her mind as she prepares to defend all those points she had won by reaching the final last season.

Dodin’s Won Just One Hard Court Match This Season
It was very early in the season that Dodin took to court at the Sydney International and as a lucky loser, won herself a main draw round. Since then, however, the Frenchwoman hasn’t come close to doing that.
Dodin was knocked out in her Australian Open opener, failed to qualify for the WTA Dubai and then lost in the first round in Doha.
More recently, she has played in Bronx on the ITF circuit, and lost in the first round and then repeated the same result at the Granby Open.
With virtually nothing to go by the way of form on hard court surfaces, Dodin will be a heavy second favourite coming into this one.

While Fernandez would have loved for some more form coming into the season’s final Grand Slam, she should have enough fire in her tank to blow Dodin away.
