Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina v Yoshihito Nishioka Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the Spaniard, who is 23, and his Japanese opponent, five years his senior.

Davidovich-Fokina Struggling on American Hard Courts

Davidovich-Fokina is widely regarded as a clay court specialist. He reached the final of the Monte Carlo Masters in April,  and won the doubles in Chile two years ago.

However, despite that, he reached the fourth round in New York two years ago, in the process defeating the likes of Hubert Hurkacz and Cameron Norrie.

So far, though, he has not enjoyed the best of fortunes on American hard courts in 2022, although he did reach the second round in Indian Wells back in March.

That, though, was followed by a first round defeat in Miami, and, more recently, he was beaten at the same stage in both Montreal and Cincinnati.

Washington Finalist Nishioka

Nishioka began the year well enough, winning a Challenger event in Columbus and then reaching the third round in Miami after coming through qualifying.

But then the Japanese endured a fourth month spell where he struggled to win a match of any kind.

He managed to play himself back into some form on the Challenger tour, but it was still wholly unexpected when he reached his first senior final in more than two years in Washington, before losing in straight sets to Nick Kyrgios.

Since then, he has reached the second round in Montreal, but his last match was a first round defeat back on the Challenger tour in Vancouver.

He has never been further than the second round in New York in seven previous visits.

Davidovich Fokina v Nishioka Prediction and Tip

Although the Spaniard reached the fourth round in Flushing Meadows two years ago, recent performances do not suggest he is in that sort of form this year, whilst Nishioka has a recent American hard court final on his CV. The Japanese might just have the edge.
