Camila Giorgi did not have the ideal preparation for this year’s US Open. Giorgi lost a ton of points for her failure to retain her National Bank Open crown in Toronto after falling in the third-und stage at the hands of Jessica Pegula.
From being Italy’s top-ranked woman, Giorgi has now dropped outside the world’s top 50, sitting at 68th ahead of the US Open. that is not necessarily a bad omen.
Giorgi barely played any tennis before the US Open in 2013, but memorably reached the second week as a qualifier. In that run, she registered a stunning win over former World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki.
Giorgi’s most recent tournament appearance was in Cincinnati where she lost to Marta Kostyuk in three sets. It was a demoralizing defeat considering that she led 3-0 in the deciding set and with chances galore to get a double break. Giorgi will be looking to avoid a third straight defeat on the WTA tour when she faces Anna Bondar for the first time.

Bondar Set for Main Draw Bout
Anna Bondar had lost in the qualifying round in each of her previous two trips to New York, with last year’s defeat to Oceane Dodin hurting to this point.
Nonetheless, the Hungarian did not dwell on failed attempts and worked her socks off in the current season to get her ranking high enough to warrant automatic entry into the main draws of Grand Slams.
Bondar has enjoyed a slightly better season than her counterpart Giorgi. She has twice the number of wins that the Italian has garnered. The Hungarian has also reached the quarterfinals or better in seven WTA tournaments across all levels.
However, she is vastly inexperienced at Grand Slam level in singles competition having not won a main draw match in her career. Will she crack a personal milestone on Monday?

Giorgi can be extremely unpredictable owing to her high-risk baseline game. But assuming nothing falls apart in terms of the execution of shots, I expect her to power into the second round.
