It’s going to be an emotional goodbye as Serena Williams is all set to play her last tournament.
One of the greatest players, male or female, to have ever played the sport, Williams dominated the women’s game for close to two decades and that is evident from the fact that she was the World No. 1 for 319 weeks in her career and 186 consecutive weeks (a joint record with Chris Evert).
A 23-time Grand Slam singles champion, Serena has 73 WTA titles in all and 39 combined major titles (in singles, doubles and mixed doubles).
The U.S. Open is where Serena won her first major title in 1999. Since then she won a total of six singles titles in Flushing Meadows. She has also had four runner-up finishes and four semifinal finishes in the tournament.
Now as the 40-year-old intends to move on from the sport, she will be hoping to go out on a high.
After being sidelined by an injury for over an year, Serena Williams returned to singles action at Wimbledon this year, but has won just one singles match in her three tournaments so far. She went down in a close match to Harmony Tan at Wimbledon, then won her first round match against Nuria Parrizas Diaz before falling to Belinda Bencic at the Canadian Open.
In her last tournament she went down to Emma Raducanu in straight sets. So things haven’t been encouraging but she will be hoping to make a good start at Flushing Meadows and will give her all in the opening round of her final act.

Kovinic on a Five-Match Losing Streak
World No. 80 Danka Kovinic has not won a match since falling to Iga Swiatek in the third round of the French Open. That is five losses in a row.
The 27-year-old Montenegro player has however reached the third round of both the Grand Slams that she has featured in this year (the Australian and the French Opens) and that remains her biggest achievement this year, as she had not gone past the second round of any major before.
Overall Kovinic has a 17-14 record from all levels this year and won her 13th ITF title in May at a clay court event in Germany.
