Liudmila Samsonova played an excellent week of tennis to win her 3rd career trophy in Cleveland and it’s a perfect warm-up for the US Open. The turnaround will be short for her but she proved to be quite resilient in the past. All matches were won in two sets and they didn’t drag on forever so she probably has some reserves left.
It’s important to start off on a strong note in New York because those first matches after a triumph can be emotionally draining. Especially when you are facing an up-and-comer who will be primed for an upset.
The Russian is enjoying a really strong season with a 20-14 record and 16-7 hard court which was dramatically improved since she returned to North America. Ten of those 16 wins came in the past month as she won the trophy in Washington and Cleveland.
It’s a confidence thing for her as the Wimbledon ban derailed her season a bit, even more so because she loves playing on grass. Now she’s back to form and looking dangerous.

Qualifier Excellence from 16-yeard old Bejlek
Teenagers making waves in WTA tennis is not common but it has happened before with a few players securing several notable wins over the years. Sara Bejlek has a decent chance to do the same but she got a really tricky draw in round one.
Samsonova is a very strong player who has a powerful serve which won’t help Bejlek much but perhaps she can continue her excellence that started in the qualifiers. Wins over veterans like Mladenovic and Watson are pretty impressive for the 16-year-old.
She is 31-9 this year and 7-4 on hard. Obviously, most of that was against lesser opponents but when you have the surprise card on your side, anything can happen in tennis. A few good winners at the perfect time and she might run away with it.
Samsonova v Bejlek Prediction and Tip
This is a very fascinating matchup that will depend on many things. Samsonova’s short turnaround will affect her but not too much. The way she handles that will most likely decide the match.
Bejlek’s comfort level will be important for her and she has a chance to prove just how good she is. If she can handle the nerves and pressure she might take a set. I don’t see her winning it though, not against the in-form Russian.
