Alison Van Uytvanck’s last two Grand Slam matches have come against the rising stars of the women’s game, Coco Gauff and Emma Raducanu. She will be facing a more known quantity on Tuesday in the shape of 42-year-old Venus Williams.
The Belgian has disappointed for the majority of 2022, despite an impressive grass-court run where she won challenger titles in Surbiton and Gaiba. Besides those results, Van Uytvanck has a losing record this year, and is on a three-match losing streak since Bad Homburg in June.

With a lifetime record at the US Open of 11%, by far her worst of the Majors, Van Uytvanck will be depending on her serve massively against Williams, which has served her extremely well particularly on grass courts. Without the serve firing, the former top 40 player will be in trouble.

Williams Close to the End
Tuesday might not be the last match of Venus Williams’ magical career, with doubles alongside sister Serena Williams to come later in the week, but there is a good chance she will be playing her last singles tournament in the Big Apple.
This year’s tournament marks 25 years since Venus made her first US Open main draw appearance, where she made the final. Since then, she has claimed seven singles and sixteen doubles titles at Slam level. Her and her sister’s impact on the sport will be felt for some time.
The 42-year-old has played little tennis in 2022, and is seeking her first singles win, after losing three matches on the bounce. Her best chance may come this week against an the out of form Belgian.
2020 was the American’s first ever opening round defeat in New York against 20th seed Karolina Muchova, and after not playing last year’s event, she is hoping for a first win since 2019. If the famous serve fires on Tuesday, there is no doubt we could be seeing more of the legendary Williams over this fortnight.
