Petra Martic hasn’t been playing that great this year and it caused a drop in her ranking. She’s 54th in the rankings which is okay but not good enough for the Croatian who actually won a trophy not long ago in Lausanne. That trophy is what kept her rankings in check but she was still forced to play qualifiers for both Toronto and Cincinnati.
She didn’t get to the main draw in either event and that is very poor prep for the US Open. A 28-17 record looks better than it really is and it’s only 6-7 on hard this year. She did have success in New York over the years thanks to her serve which is a major weapon.
Last year was a round two loss to Ajla Tomljanovic and a win would help. Two would be even greater as the Croatian needs some wins to finish the year strong.
Gracheva is an opponent she beat a couple of times in the past and is playing terrible tennis so she had a lucky draw. Now it’s about delivering on the court.

Winless July & August for Gracheva
The last time Varvara Gracheva won a match was on June 7th. Since then the Russian has gone winless losing nine straight matches. Most of them have been in straight sets but she actually won a set last week in Cleveland against Madison Brengle.
It’s just been a shocking display of poor form from the 22-year-old who prefers clay to hard courts but has a playstyle that can work on all surfaces. Gracheva is a baseliner and that should work against Martic if she displays it on a high level.
She hasn’t in a while and that might be a big problem. Their H2H is not good for Gracheva either as she lost all four matches and all happened in the final two years. She only won one set as well so this is a very tricky matchup for her regardless of her form.
Martic v Gracheva Prediction and Tip
Petra Martic is the overwhelming favourite in this one and it’s not hard to see why. Her year hasn’t been the best, especially on hard courts but she has at least won in this or the previous month.
Gracheva lost nine straight matches and I have my doubts it will change after this one.
