Wildcard Fourlis Makes US Open Debut

Fourlis is making her US Open debut after being granted a wildcard.

The Australian, who has battled back after shoulder reconstructive surgery two years ago saw her confined to the side-lines for a while, began the year by reaching the final of her home Grand Slam in Melbourne in the Mixed Doubles, where she and partner Jason Kubler finished runners-up.

She has gone on to have her most successful season yet, winning three ITF singles’ titles, and reaching a career high ranking (although she has since slipped back a little).

At Wimbledon she came through the qualifying competition to make the first round, but then lost to the Belgian veteran Kirsten Flipkens.

In her last match on the senior WTA tour she was beaten in the first round in Granby, Canada.

Qualifier Yuan Part of New Chinese Contingent

One of the new generation of female Chinese tennis players, Yuan made her Grand Slam debut at Wimbledon as a lucky loser, although she promptly lost to Amanda Anisimova of the USA in straight sets.

However, she earns her place in the main draw in New York on merit, having come through three rounds of qualifying.

She beat Katie Volynets of the USA, Mai Hontama of Japan, and then another Australian, Maddison Inglis, without dropping a set and was barely troubled by any of them.

Like her opponent, she has enjoyed success on the ITF tour this year, winning an event in Australia in January, and finishing runner-up in another, in Latvia, last month.

Fourlis v Yuan Prediction and Tip

Both players are seeking what would be a maiden Grand Slam singles win. Yuan, though, may just have the edge, having got a feel for the conditions and balls in the qualifying competition.
