Sabalenka Form Bit of a Concern

Sure, Sabalenka did make it to the semifinal at the Cincinnati Open in the last tournament she played before coming into this year’s US Open but for a player who was ranked second in the world recently, her season overall hasn’t been one to remember.

A 24-17 win-loss record is still solid, putting her at 10th on the WTA Race table, but the world number six would have loved to do a lot more.

A lot more than the two finals she has featured in this year to go with no trophies to show for it. And definitely a lot more than the 5-3 win-loss record she has had in the US Open Series in the lead-up to the season’s final major.

What Sabalenka definitely needs to shrug off is her 11-10 win-loss on hard court surfaces this season, which for a player who has won nine hard court titles, is quite abysmal.

Harrison, a Surprise Qualifier

She is ranked 243rd in the world and has never done better than a ranking of 236th, which is why not too many would have expected Harrison to make it through to the main draw.

That Harrison did that by winning three matches, all in straight sets, delivered a cherry on top.

This isn’t a one-off though with the American having also qualified for Wimbledon earlier this year and made it to the second round in what was her maiden Grand Slam main draw appearance.

Harrison had beaten Arantxa Rus in that first round encounter there. Can she overcome Sabalenka here? Seems highly doubtful but she has already done better than someone her ranking would have expected.
