So far it has been a forgettable season for World No. 10 Garbine Muguruza and the two-time Grand Slam champion will be desperately hoping for a change of fortunes at the U.S. Open.
The problem is that the last major has proven to be the least productive for her throughout her career. She claimed the French Open title in 2016, won the Wimbledon in 2017 and finished runner-up in 2015 and was a finalist at the Australian Open in 2020, but when it comes to the U.S. Open, the Spaniard is yet to go past the fourth round.
Muguruza will be making her 10th appearance in the tournament and has made it to the Round of 16 on just two occasions. One of those was during a stellar 42-17 season last year.
In contrast, she has just not got going this season and brings a poor 9-14 record into the tournament. She has won just one match in the first three Grand Slams and that was at the Australian Open. She has also reached just one quarterfinal in 14 tournaments and that was in Doha, where she won her first two rounds before falling in the last eight stage. That was the only occasion this year when the 28-year-old had won consecutive matches.
Muguruza has a 3-7 record in her last 10 matches and has won just one match from two tournaments during the North American swing.

Tauson Continues to Struggle After Return from Injury
Just like Muguruza, Clara Tauson was in brilliant form last year, winning her first two titles in Lyon and Luxembourg and finishing runner-up in Courmayeur. Overall she finished with a 42-15 record, across levels, last season. This year, however, she has struggled to get going and brings a 10-12 season record into the tournament.
Part of the reason was a back injury which forced her to miss almost the entire clay and grass seasons.
The 19-year-old Dane, who began the year by reaching the last eight in Melbourne and the third round of her Australian Open debut, returned from injury to take part in the North American swing this month. She lost in the opening round in Washington and Cincinnati and could win just one match in Cleveland. She also participated in the WTA 125 event in Concord, winning her first two matches to reach the quarterfinals, before exiting the tournament.
Ranked No. 57 Tauson is unable to produce results like last year and may struggle in what will be her second US Open campaign. She had lost in the second round last year.
Muguruza v Tauson Prediction and Tip
It’s a match between two players in search of momentum. Muguruza is the seeded player and her vast experience gives her the edge. However, the Dane is expected to take her to three sets.
